I. Briefly review the project form. Discuss the project theme, outline and time line; review the project and curriculum objectives.

In this project students explored the significance of the year 1949 and how it not only effected Newfoundland but also Israel. This was done by researching the events leading up to that year and interviewing people who lived during that time.

Project Outline:

  • Established e-pals with class in Israel.
  • Interviewed people who lived and remembered the political changes of 1949 in Newfoundland.
  • Converted the interviews to web pages.
  • Researched the formation of Israel as a nation.
  • Interviewed a person in Israel who was knowledgeable about the country's struggle for nationhood.
  • Created a web page from this information.
Project Objectives:
  • The students would become proficient at using e-mail.
  • The students would learn how to create basic web pages.
  • The students would come to realize the mixed feeling Newfoundlanders had about joining Canada.
  • The students would learn about the changes that Israel was going through at the same time.
  • The students would learn through their e-pals about Israeli culture and history.

III. Briefly comment on any successes or problems that were encountered throughout the life of the project.

Difficulties:

  • Lost contact because of differences in school schedules.

IV. Comment on if and how the project can be expanded next year.

  • Continue contact with present teacher with new group of students
  • Complete more interviews with people from Israel who remembered when it became a nation.
  • Establish e-pals with other countries that have recently become nations.
