Art for the New Millennium
I. Briefly review the project form. Discuss the project theme, outline and time line; review the project and curriculum objectives.
This project's aim was to develop an online student art gallery. Grade 10 - 12 students would complete art projects in class (including drawings in various media, paintings, pottery, sculpture and computer-generated art works and animations) and then display them to a larger audience via the Web. Students would collect the work, photograph them using a digital camera, construct the Web pages used for the gallery and then go on to add to the gallery so that it might also serve as an archive of student work. These art works are the result of studio components in three high school courses offered at PWC (Art Technology 1201, Art and Design 2200, and Art and Design 3200). The themes/nature of the art works are student-generated. Students choose the pieces for the gallery. They are also responsible for upgrading and changing the exhibits.
Curriculum objectives include students taking responsibility for their work(s), learning how to digitally photograph and display their work, and development of techniques and skills. Students also develop skills in socialization, leadership and planning strategies.
It started January 20, 1999 and was up and ready before its proposed goal date of June 28.
II. Show the audience the outcome of the project proposal.
Results and a tour of the project can be seen at:
http://www.pwc.k12.nf.ca/art
III. Briefly comment on any successes or problems that were encountered throughout the life of the project.
The PWC's Online Art Gallery is a great looking site with easy navigation and links to at least two other neighbouring high school art galleries, plus a connection to the PWC school site and informative notes on the PWC art program offerings. Approximately 50 students have work represented on-line. This project took up several hours of teacher time; an intern helped with the project in addition to Ms. Beaumont and Ms. Rickets. Depth of documentation notes suffered due to the lack of time (ex. student names, grade levels, etc.).
IV. Comment on any aspects of the project that you would do differently.
Along with enhanced/complete documentation next year, they are planning on showing the processes students went through to create their work using written descriptions, stills and video-clips. More frequent updating will be done.
V. Comment on if and how the project can be expanded next year.
(Noted in previous question).
VI. If you are presenting a project other than your own, provide breif anecodotes of the project leader's expereinces.
This gallery takes a lot of work to achieve. Ms. Beaumont had to count on Ms. Rickets for much of the technical skills. The clear images are the result of a good quality digital camera. *At least one student was able to use the site as part of his ‘portfolio' to get accepted into art school.
