Kids Debugging the Millennium Bug

I. Briefly review the project form. Discuss the project theme, outline and time line; review the project and curriculum objectives.

The theme of my project was researching the millennium bug problem with grade five students at Holy Trinity Elementary School in Torbay. It started in early March and continued until the end of the school year. The objectives were to enable the students to ask questions and then discover the answers to these questions via many learning resources. Then they had to inform the whole school about the bug.

II. Show the audience the outcome of the project proposal.

Results and a tour of the project can be seen at: http://www.htes.k12.nf.ca/~pmolloy/kidshtm.htm

III. Briefly comment on any successes or problems that were encountered throughout the life of the project.

  1. Not enough time was available in the technology lab.
  2. Too much information for students to choose relevant sites.

IV. Comment on any aspects of the project that you would do differently.

Would have did posters during the second week of project, and announcements every second week. Also, I would have gotten the students to do presentations in other classrooms.

V. Comment on if and how the project can be expanded next year.

There are ways of adding new details to the webpage. Students could write up answers to the questions asked during the first week of the project.
