Computer Parts

I. Briefly review the project form. Discuss the project theme, outline and time line; review the project and curriculum objectives.

Theme: A comprehensive site describing all the parts of a computer and their basic function.

The students will accomplish the following objectives:

  • Research and compile the information provided in the text and from other course materials as well as from the resource centre.
  • Use Frontpage 98 to assemble web page and setup hyperlinks.
  • Edit, crop, cut and paste images and text.
  • Transfer information via the computer network rather than using diskettes.
  • Download and upload web pages and images.
  • Search for and join listserves.
  • Work as a member of a team.
  • Add their URL to at least 3 search engines.
  • Learn proper netiquitte and email use.

II. Show the audience the outcome of the project proposal.

Results and a tour of the project can be seen at: http://www.k12.nf.ca/janecollins/computer.htm

III. Briefly comment on any successes or problems that were encountered throughout the life of the project.

The primary goal of the project was to use computer applications in order to enhance student learning through web page design. Students learned basic computer functions associated with most software such as loading, saving, modifying, copying and moving files. They also developed image editing skills. In addition, they acquired the skills necessary for uploading and downloading files, completing a search on the WWW, narrowing a search and selectively coping the necessary information and pasting it into Frontpage 98 Editor, Corel Photopaint 8 and Corel Presentation. Students learned to plan ahead and develop their web pages on paper first enabling them to plan more effectively both as a team and individually, thus minimizing errors. Finally, they learned the skills necessary for adding their URL's to various search engines.

IV. Comment on any aspects of the project that you would do differently.

The only aspect of the project that I would do differently would be to monitor online time more effectively. With a monthly quota of 30 hours for the entire school, our quota could expire before the month was up. Outside of this, all went well. From past experience, I was able to manage this project more efficiently. For example, I had students use a common theme so that it corresponded with Jane Collins' home page. Thus, while navigating, students knew they were at the same site . Also, students used common images and backgrounds so that uploading pages would be manageable in size. Students used folders to save individual pages so that each would be distinguishable after uploading. As well, students assigned file names for their opening page. In this manner, a common list could be devised so students could easily link to one another.
