La Francophonie Mondiale

I. Briefly review the project proposal form. Discuss the project theme, outline and time line; review the project and curriculum objectives.

This project attempts to integrate technology into the area of Languages. French students at Prince of Wales Collegiate in St. John's, NF undertake a detailed study of francophone countries; themes studied include history, geography, culture, economy, political structures, links to "la francophonie". Students conduct research, then prepare and present a Power Point presentation on the country they have selected. The project attempts to integrate all language learning strategies with technology skills.

The project is typically introduced in October, with presentations of 15-20 minutes beginning in late November and finishing in December. Students are evaluated formatively and summatively. By the time they have completed their presentations, they have practiced all areas of language learning; reading, writing, listening, speaking, viewing; in keeping with curriculum and language learning objectives. In addition, they have learned a great deal about the dynamics of many Francophone countries.

Once the students' presentations have been completed, we design a web site to allow others to view their work. Students have done video introductions, in English and French, for each continent. The viewer simply chooses the continent and the links to countries of interest. The project could be adapted to suit many other curriculum areas. We feel we are on the way to meaningful integration of technology in the study of Languages.

II. Show the audience the outcome of the project proposal.

Results and a tour of the project can be seen at: http://www.pwc.k12.nf.ca/francophonie

III. Briefly comment on any successes or problems that were encountered throughout the life of the project.

The project has been tremendously satisfying to date. Students are independent learners and are making efforts to refine the different skills associated with language learning. Their work with technology allows them to advance their skills and also necessitates that they become the instructor for their teacher, whose technology skills pale in comparison to theirs!

Any challenges created by this project involve the availability of computers, projectors, etc. Also, scheduling and adhering to time lines are critical. Similarly, students must understand the importance of respecting deadlines, timelines, etc. in order to facilitate the completion of the presentations.

IV. Comment on any aspects of the project that you would do differently.

The basic structure of the project is satisfactory at this point. We will likely change and/or introduce themes as necessary.

V. Comment on if and how the project can be expanded next year.

We plan to introduce similar projects in other Language courses. Currently, all Languages students at Prince of Wales utilize technology in some part of their program. We plan to adapt the project so that we can expand the use of technology in Languages while meeting Languages curriculum objectives.
